The Secret to Happy, Healthy Winter Skin

The Secret to Happy, Healthy Winter Skin

winter-skin-careWinter is here and for many of us that means dry, red, irritated skin. If you could enjoy healthy skin year round, would you be willing to make a few changes to your skin care habits? Gorgeous, healthy skin is possible, even during the winter. The key is making sure you have plenty of moisture. We’ll tell you how.

Why Is My Skin Dry During the Winter?

If you want healthy winter skin, moisture is the place to start. Winter’s air is drier than summer air and indoor heaters only make the problem worse. This often leads to dry, irritated skin. Even if you have great skin the rest of the year, winter can be a problem. Winter skin dryness can occur at all ages and to people without any other skin problems.

What Can You Do About Dry Winter Skin?

Dry skin and winter go hand in hand, but there are things you can do to restore the moisture to your skin. Here are some ideas:

  • Moisturize Often- The moisturizer you use during the summer might not be enough for dry winter skin. If your skin feels dry use a thicker, richer moisturizer. We carry a wide range of skin care products and would be happy to make some recommendations if you need help choosing. Moisturize morning and night and after each cleansing.
  • Skip the Hot Showers- Hot showers strip the skin of its natural oils. Opt for lukewarm showers or baths instead. If your skin turns red, your shower is too hot.
  • Use a Humidifier- A humidifier in your home or office (or both) can help restore some of the moisture to the air that the heater strips out of it. If you only use one humidifier, use it in your bedroom while you sleep at night.
  • Use Gentle Cleansers- Use gentle products, especially in the winter. Harsh soaps and cleansers can dry the skin out more.

Other Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

Keeping your skin properly moisturized is one of the biggest things you can do for your skin this winter, but there are other important things to remember if you want healthy, beautiful winter skin.

  • Use Sunscreen- The sun shines all year round. Use sunscreen every season. SPF 15+ is generally sufficient for daily use, but wear a higher SPF if you’ll be hitting the slopes. If you’re skiing or snowboard, be on high alert for sunburn since the sun reflecting off the snow and the higher elevation put you at an increased risk for sunburn.
  • Opt for Skin Rejuvenation Treatments- If you’ve been wanting to come in for a skin rejuvenation treatment or a skin resurfacing treatment, winter is a great time to do it.

Many treatments require reduced sun exposure for a few days while you heal and this is often easier to do during the winter. Call today and schedule your treatment.
